Food: From austerity to abundance – waste not, want not at Rainham Hall

Sep 15th to Sep 15th Rainham Hall

The Women’s Institute has been forefront in campaigns about food over the decades, particularly during the Second World War years. Food wastage remains a priority, and we’re delighted to bring you this partnership event all about rationing, jam making and pickling linking the WI’s campaigning with our current Hall exhibition about the 1940s and 1950s history of the building.

Visitors on the day will have a number of free entry activities to choose from:

The Pride of the WI in the Coach House – discover how jam making, bottling, and pickling can be used in order to avoid food waste.  Visitors will be able to drop into this location throughout the day to gain ideas, recipes and confidence in these traditional WI skills.  The Coach House is also where you will be able to see the display of entries and find out the results of the inter Essex WI competitions for jam, chutneys and bottling.  (See www.essexwi.org.uk for details on how to enter)

Talks in the Hayloft

There will be timed talks throughout the day on issues around not wasting food, the Hayloft holds a maximum capacity of 30 so free tickets will be issued just before the talks on a first come, first served basis.
